Business process has long been a fundamental concept in the design, improvement and automation of many aspects of an organisation’s operations. Many tools in the BPA domain exist that allow an analyst to define, model and share process definitions, and prepare these for automation in a process execution environment. BPM and data integration environments are increasingly capable of evolving and exposing operational data.

However, all this comes at a cost. BPA tools are primarily focused on specific process improvement initiatives, and BPM tools are primarily focused on transactional/operational process efficiency. Because of this, neither technology provides assistance in determining and evolving how processes contribute to business outcomes, nor does either provide a clear line between improved processes and business outcomes. This means that neither really exploits process understanding to inform business decision making around shape and change at a strategic level. Dick Whittington, MooD International’s Chief Strategy Officer, adds :
